Shark in a skin suit.

That's how Foggy describes their new client, and Matt has to agree. The man is far from innocent, and very obviously dangerous.

As they sit in a locked room with the man accused of murdering another person with a bowling ball handcuffed to the table across from them the dollar signs have turned off in Foggy's eyes and he's ready to step away from the whole deal.

"We should not be doing this."

"Doing what?"

"Defending professional criminals."

A man charged with a brutal murder pleading self-defense, a mysterious suit showing up in their office with far too much information on all of them, who gives no name but leaves a large check behind; there's much more to this than even the obvious flags raised on the surface already, and Matt knows the only way to uncover more is to stay close to the situation.

Which means taking the case.

It's later, back at the office, that Foggy calls Matt on his strongarming of the whole affair.

"First you decide we're taking the case, unilaterally," Foggy says, confusion and exasperation clear in his voice. "And then you cross-examine the guy like we're playing bad cop/worse cop."

Unable to give Foggy the truth behind his motivations Matt puts on another defense.

"If we wanna keep the lights on we have to take some cases for the money. You were right about that."

Matt's hope of appeasing Foggy by giving him a nod of concession on what's been a long back and forth between them doesn't work and Foggy instead responds with more disconcert.

"Okay, for the record, this is the first time you've ever said I was right. I hate it."

Frowning at the situation, and knowing there's no way he can give Foggy the real reasons why, Matt admits, "Sometimes we have to do things that we aren't proud of."

"Yeah, but… this can't become what we do," Foggy replies, earnest.

"Yeah, I know."

The whole purpose of them setting out on their own was because this wasn't the type of lawyers they wanted to become. They wanted their firm built on principals stronger than the bottom line.

They wanted to do good things, the right things, together.

Foggy reminds Matt of this and there's nothing Matt can do at this point but apologize.

"I got carried away. I'm sorry, Foggy."

Foggy accepts without hesitation and gives up on the balk and instead moves forward, ready to tackle this thing beside Matt. They'll examine the case, mount a defense, and leave it to the jury to decide what happens to their client.

And hopefully Matt will gain some answers that will make taking the case on somehow worth it.
